In October 2005, John and Helen will be setting off on a unique journey to Cape Town in South Africa, travelling overland all the way in a customised Land Rover. This is quite an adventure even for the director of a travel company, though John appears admirably calm about the whole thing.

The idea came to him on a trip to Durban with his business partner Craig. Making an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to get to Lesotho in a 4×4, John wondered what it would be like to drive across the entire continent in a Landy. Two years later, he’s ready to find out. (Craig was supposed to meet him in Cape Town to drive the Landy back home, but that aspect of the plan was quietly dropped.)

This site is intended to give a bit of background information about the trip, the two people making it and the vehicle they’ll be living and travelling in for about 9 months. It will also feature a regular blog, sent by John and Helen from the roadside, and a map of their progress.

Armed with salad we headed towards a bush campsite […]

Zambia

Monday 5th March – Tuesday 14th March
The escape from the rain in Malawi was not a complete success, but at least we managed the ‘Malawi’ part. In Zambia it was still raining, so we bought 2 lovely stripy umbrellas in Chipata before heading to a campsite on the road towards South Luangwa National Park. We […]
